For more than a century the Luis Cañas family has been devoted to viticulture. The winery, located in the Rioja Alavesa región (the northern part of the DOCa Rioja), became one of the best in the area, with numerous awards and accolades.
The new important phase for the company started 30 years ago when the son of Luis Cañas decided to convince his parents to move the focus from the production based on young wines to aged ones and improve the quality of the wines.
Since then they have been producing wines of exceptional quality, combining the traditions with modernity and the pursuit of excellence in the great Rioja. The winery has at its disposal 350 hectares of vineyards, where they cultivate varieties Garnacha, Tempranillo, Graciano, Mazuelo, Viura and Malvasia. The vines age between 30 and 60 years, they are divided into 850 plots, all the grapes are harvested manually.
The vineyards are characterized by being cultivated on calcareous clay soils of low fertility, mostly on hillsides or terraces, and are situated at an altitude of between 450 and 600 meters above sea level.
