Luis Cañas Gran Reserva

Spain
DOC Rioja
75cl.
Alc. 14.5º
Year: 2013
Sugar: 1 - 2gr/L
GRAPES: 95% Tempranillo, 5% Graciano. Age of vines: between 50 and 60 years.
AGED: 24 months in new oak casks and another 36 months in the bottle. Type of oak: 70% French, 30% American.
This is an unusual Gran Reserva wine. It bears the name but is not at all traditional in style. In the classic Gran Reserva the color is slightly brown with an orange rim, this one is ruby red, brilliant and clear. And in the classic styled wines the fruit barely appeared, but as the fruit is the identity of the Luis Cañas wines, this one has lots of it despite of its 24 months in new oak casks and another 36 in the bottle. It is classical, yes, but much fresher with a lively colour and lots of flavor.

GRAPE VARIETIES
95% Tempranillo, 5% Graciano. Age of vines: between 50 and 60 years. Handpicked and transported in boxes of max. 15 kg. Fermentation in wooden vats.
BOUQUET
Considerable aromatic complexity thanks to careful production methods. At first sniff there is lots of fruit, then the fine spices, eucalyptus, anisettes, smoky oak follow through, and when left in the glass to breathe, it shows cigar box, coffee and fruit liqueur.
PALATE
As always in Luis Cañas wines the focus is fruit. This one has an extremely round mouth feel, with no sharp edges, and no dry feeling in the mouth. It preserves the freshness of the fruit and simply invites you to have another glass. The wine is irresistible.
VITICULTURE

Respect for the environment and the hard work of each and every link in the human chain involved in the process are vital for turning the boon of rational viticulture into success.

Rational viticulture is a farming system which optimises the use of natural resources and mechanisms to the maximum, guaranteeing the future of sustainable agriculture.

Biological, chemical and other methods are carefully selected and balanced in order to ensure the protection of the environment.

The use of herbicides, synthetic fertilisers and aggressive products or practices is strictly forbidden in order to protect the surroundings and obtain vines with a strengthened immune system so that they can defend themselves on their own.

For this work, they have a specific field department made up of an agricultural engineer, a technical agronomist and oenologist as well as 8 workers who are true vineyard masters. The aim is to have healthy land, (surely the best legacy they can leave for future generations) and as a result, healthier fruit and wines.

WINEMAKING

Care, perfection and loving attention to what they do can be seen from the very way they transport the clusters of grapes, in small plastic crates in the case of the oldest vineyards and in small trailers for younger vines.

As well as selecting on the vine itself, ALL Luis Cañas wines undergo a double selection process.

First they pass through a sorting table where the clusters are selected by hand and subsequently, each individual berry is checked on a Mistral table, so that only those in perfect condition continue in the process.

The most stringent winemaking process. They select the French- and American-oak casks, from among the best cooperages in the world. The cask stock is renewed continuously, so the average age is three years. A real luxury.
