This minority and exclusive Rioja variety was rediscovered in 35 vines of a centenary vineyard after many vineyards and many native varieties were lost in the first third of the 20th century due to phylloxera. Bodegas Valdemar, as on other occasions, was a pioneer in trying to recover this variety, planting it in 2001 and marketing a first single-varietal 2005 vintage, the Balcón de Pilatos terroir being the best environment for this enigmatic and scarce variety to shine.

AROMA
Complex and intense aroma of ripe black fruit with fine notes of sweet spices such as vanilla, cocoa and tobacco. Character typical of the variety.
PALATE
Smooth, creamy, mellow, without edges and with nerve. Hints of sweet spices. Very long and elegant.
VITICULTURE
Vineyard of 8.2 hectares located in Yécora (Álava) at an altitude of 500 metres and with three terraces with views towards Oyón and Logroño to the south and the Sierra Cantabria to the north. Due to its privileged conditions and the characteristics of each of its three terraces, it was chosen after careful evaluation to replant the Maturana.
WINEMAKING
14 months in new fine grain American oak barrels with 3 years of drying.
PAIR WELL WITH
Particularly suitable for stewed or grilled meats. It is also a good accompaniment to cured and semi-cured cheeses.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Recommended serving temperature: 16-18°C.
