Rioja Vega today is one of the very few wine cellars whose history and winemaking tradition date back to the dawn of the wine culture in Rioja. Those were the years when the French maestros, fleeing from the phylloxera that ravaged the vineyards in their country, decided to settle down on these lands. They knew that proximity to the Ebro river, its poor soils and the local fine climate would result in producing exceptional wines.
At that time a Spanish entrepreneur, Felipe Ugalde, decided to create his own winery in a town of Haro. It was 1882 and for the moment the appellation of Rioja didn´t even exist. Ugalde got to learn from the first Rioja pioneers and later, pass the knowledge on to his heirs.
Since then more than 125 years have passed by and Felipe Ugalde’s dream is still alive. During all these years the winemakers have been steadily gaining wisdom, experience and knowledge by adapting to technological advances and carrying out research in order to be able to offer the wide range of quality wines we have today.
